University College Cork was founded in 1845 as one of the three Queen's Colleges — with Belfast and Galway — endowed by Queen Victoria for the advancement of learning in Ireland, and opened in 1849 with 23 professors and 181 students in the founding faculties of Medicine, Arts and Law. It took the name University College, Cork, under the Irish Universities Act 1908, and is today a constituent university of the National University of Ireland. The Sunday Times has named it Irish University of the Year five times, most recently in 2017, and in 2011 it became the first university to achieve the ISO 50001 energy-management standard.
