Its oldest building, the Quadrangle with the Aula Maxima, was built of local limestone in Tudor Gothic style as a replica of Christ Church at Oxford, on a campus that stretches along the River Corrib close to the city centre. Known as University College, Galway from 1908 and as NUI Galway from 1997, it adopted its present name in September 2022, and it belongs to the Coimbra Group of 42 long-established European universities.
