Dublin City University was created in 1975 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Dublin, enrolled its first students in 1980 and was elevated to university status by statute in September 1989. In 2016 it completed the incorporation of four other Dublin institutions, including St Patrick's College. Based on the Northside of Dublin, as of 2025 it has 20,377 students and over 110,000 alumni; its adjunct faculty has included the former Taoiseach John Bruton and the lateral-thinking pioneer Edward de Bono.
