University College Dublin is Ireland's largest university, with more than 38,000 students, and a member of the National University of Ireland. It descends from the Catholic University of Ireland, opened in 1854 with John Henry Newman as first rector, renamed University College in 1883 and chartered as UCD in 1908. Its faculties moved from Dublin's centre to the 133-hectare Belfield campus south of the city; in 1991 UCD purchased a second site at Blackrock, home of the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, Ireland's dedicated graduate business campus.
