The University of Deusto, owned by the Society of Jesus, is the oldest private university in Spain: it first opened in 1886, born of the Basque Country's desire for a university of its own, in a building by Francisco de Cubas that was then the largest in Bilbao and now faces the Guggenheim Museum. Its Universidad Comercial, founded in 1916, was the first business school in Spain — and the only one for nearly 50 years. Today the university has campuses in Bilbao and San Sebastián, with the Deusto Business School branch in Madrid.
