Edinburgh Napier University began as Napier Technical College in 1964, named for John Napier, the 16th-century Scottish mathematician who invented logarithms — and its Merchiston campus embraces the medieval tower where he was born. Inaugurated as a university in 1992 and renamed Edinburgh Napier in 2009, it teaches over 21,000 students from its Merchiston, Craiglockhart and Sighthill campuses, including thousands on transnational programmes abroad — with students drawn from more than 140 nations.
