Ghent University was founded in 1817 by the Dutch King William I — before the Belgian state itself existed — together with the universities of Liège and Leuven, and passed to Belgian administration after the revolution of 1830. In 1930 it became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, where French and earlier Latin had been the academic languages, and in 1991 it gained major autonomy, dropping 'State University' from its name. Today it is Belgium's second-largest university, with 50,000 students and 9,000 staff, the famous Boekentoren library tower, one of Belgium's biggest hospitals, and a Global Campus in Songdo, South Korea.
