UCLouvain is Belgium's largest French-speaking university and heir to one of Europe's oldest: the original University of Louvain, founded in 1425, was the first university in Belgium and the Low Countries, and was abolished in 1797 in the revolutionary era; a new Catholic university founded in 1834 is frequently identified as its continuation. In 1968 the university split along language lines, and the French-speaking Université catholique de Louvain moved to Louvain-la-Neuve — a town expressly built to house it, 30 km southeast of Brussels. Since 2018 it has used the branding UCLouvain, following its merger with Saint-Louis University in Brussels.
