Kingston University London goes back to the Kingston Technical Institute of 1899, which taught chemistry, electrical wiring, construction and nursing to the south-west London borough. Merged with the College of Art to form Kingston Polytechnic in 1970, it became a university in 1992. Its four faculties — including the Kingston School of Art and a combined business and social sciences faculty — serve around 17,000 students across four campuses in Kingston and Roehampton, and in 2017 it won The Guardian University Award for teaching excellence.
