Lancaster University Management School traces to Lancaster University's foundation in 1964, which brought Europe's first department of operational research. Rather than copying the London and Manchester schools born of the Franks report, Lancaster wove marketing, operational research, finance and systems thinking into a School of Business and Organizational Studies in 1969, renamed in 1974 to reflect interests spanning business, trade unions and public services. Alan Mercer's reorganisation from 1982 forged the integrated LUMS, whose single submission to the 1992 research assessment earned the top grade and helped lift Lancaster into the UK's research elite. The MBA arrived in 1989.
