About University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh was founded by the town council under a royal charter of King James VI in 1582 and opened in 1583 — one of Scotland's four ancient universities and the sixth-oldest in continuous operation in the English-speaking world. It was central to the Scottish Enlightenment that earned Edinburgh the nickname 'Athens of the North', and its alumni run from David Hume and Charles Darwin to Alexander Graham Bell and three British prime ministers. Scotland's largest university, it occupies five campuses rich in historic architecture, belongs to the Russell Group and the League of European Research Universities, and counts some twenty Nobel laureates among its affiliates.
