The University of Málaga was born of a civic campaign: in 1968 the Association of Friends of the University of Málaga formed to demand a university for what was then the only European city of over 300,000 inhabitants without one, and the university was founded by decree in 1972, grouping the city's existing centres of higher education. Today it teaches 30,203 bachelor's students across 65 degree courses on two campuses, with classes reaching beyond the city to Ronda and Antequera.
