Newcastle University began with medical lectures offered in 1832 — John Snow, the future father of epidemiology, among the first students — formalised as the School of Medicine and Surgery in 1834, joined by the College of Physical Science in 1871. The Newcastle colleges merged into King's College in 1937 within the federal University of Durham, and in 1963 an Act of Parliament made King's College the independent University of Newcastle upon Tyne. A redbrick and Russell Group founding member, it now teaches across three faculties with overseas campuses in Singapore and Malaysia.
