About Queen's University Belfast

Queen's University Belfast received its charter in 1845 as Queen's College, Belfast — founded, together with the colleges at Cork and Galway, as part of the Queen's University of Ireland to open higher education to Catholics and Presbyterians, a counterpart to then almost exclusively Anglican Trinity College Dublin. It opened in 1849 with 23 professors and 195 students, in the Lanyon Building designed by Sir Charles Lanyon that still anchors the campus. A public research university and Russell Group member with roots in the Belfast Academical Institution of 1810, Queen's offers roughly 300 degree programmes and is associated with two Nobel laureates and a Turing Award winner.
