Royal Holloway, University of London was founded at Egham in 1879 by the Victorian entrepreneur and philanthropist Thomas Holloway, and opened by Queen Victoria in 1886 as an all-women college; it joined the University of London in 1900 and admitted its first male undergraduates in 1965. The 1985 merger with Bedford College — another pioneering women's institution — gave it its formal name, and in 2022 it became a university in its own right within the federation. Its campus is crowned by the Founder's Building, a Grade I listed red-brick palace modelled on the Château de Chambord.
