The University of Salamanca is a public research university in Salamanca, Spain, founded in 1218 by King Alfonso IX. It is the oldest university in the Hispanic world and the fourth oldest in the world in continuous operation, and today has over 30,000 students from 50 nationalities. A royal charter from King Alfonso X in 1254 established rules for its organisation and endowment and named it for the first time, and a papal bull of Alexander IV in 1255 granted universal recognition to its degrees. Its School of Salamanca famously debated the morality and laws of colonisation in the Indies alongside the development of economics, philosophy and theology.
