The University of Seville began as the Colegio de Santa María de Jesús, created by the archdeacon Maese Rodrigo Fernández de Santaella; in 1505 a bull of Pope Julius II granted it the faculty to teach degrees in Theology, Philosophy, Law, Medicine and Arts, and in 1551 a Royal Provision allowed it to become officially a university with all the privileges of the other Spanish universities. Five centuries on, it is one of Spain's great public universities, with a student body of 57,214 in 2022.
