About University of St Andrews

The University of St Andrews is the oldest of Scotland's four ancient universities and the third-oldest in the English-speaking world after Oxford and Cambridge, founded in 1413 by papal bull of the Avignon Antipope Benedict XIII to a small group of Augustinian clergy. Its colleges and eighteen academic schools are scattered through the seaside town, where in term time over a third of the population is university staff or students, keeping traditions alive from Raisin Weekend to the May Dip. Fiercely selective and strikingly international — about 45% of the intake comes from outside the UK — it counts five Nobel laureates among alumni and staff, along with the Prince and Princess of Wales.
