The University of Strathclyde descends from the Andersonian Institute, created in 1796 by the will of John Anderson, professor at Glasgow, to be 'a place of useful learning'. Through a century and a half as Glasgow's technical college — Royal Technical College from 1912, Royal College of Science and Technology from 1956 — it received its royal charter in 1964 as the UK's first technological university, merging with the Scottish College of Commerce in the same act, the seed of today's Strathclyde Business School. With 25,000 students it is Scotland's third-largest university.
