About University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham received its royal charter in 1900 — the first English redbrick university to do so, and the first English unitary university — succeeding Queen's College (born in 1825 as the Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery) and Sir Josiah Mason's Science College of 1875. A founding member of the Russell Group and Universitas 21, it educates one of the UK's five largest student bodies. Its campus landmarks range from the 100-metre Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower to the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, with works by Van Gogh, Picasso and Monet; alumni and academics include two British prime ministers, Sir Edward Elgar and eleven Nobel laureates.
