About University of Glasgow (Adam Smith)

The University of Glasgow was founded by papal bull in 1451, making it the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's four ancient universities. A pillar of the Scottish Enlightenment, it educated Adam Smith — after whom its business school is named — along with James Watt, Lord Kelvin, three British prime ministers and a signatory of the American Declaration of Independence. A 19th-century pioneer in opening higher education to the commercial middle class, Glasgow has been based at Gilmorehill in the city's West End since 1870 and is a member of the Russell Group and Universitas 21.
