The University of Liverpool was founded in 1881 as University College Liverpool and received its royal charter in 1903. It claims to be the original 'redbrick' — the phrase was inspired by its Victoria Building — and its record of firsts is long: the UK's first departments of oceanography, civic design, architecture and biochemistry, and the first independent UK university campus in China, Xi'an Jiaotong–Liverpool University in Suzhou, now joined by a second international campus in Bengaluru. A founding member of the Russell Group and the N8, it counts ten Nobel laureates among alumni and staff.
