The University of Stirling was founded by royal charter in 1967 — the first new university established in Scotland in nearly 400 years — on the walled Airthrey Castle estate in the foothills of the Ochil Hills. Lord Robbins, author of the report that expanded British higher education, became its first chancellor in 1968. The 360-acre campus and its landscape were named by ICOMOS among the UK's top twenty heritage sites of the twentieth century. With 14,000 students, Stirling teaches the world's only human rights and diplomacy master's run in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research.
