The University of Sussex received its royal charter in August 1961, the first of the 'plate glass' generation, on a campus at Falmer wrapped by the South Downs National Park a few kilometres from central Brighton. Deliberately international from birth, it counts roughly one foreign student in three among its nearly 20,000, with staff of over 140 nationalities. Five Nobel Prize winners and a Crafoord laureate have served on its faculty, and more than a third of its students are postgraduates.
