About Universitat de València

The University of Valencia is one of the oldest universities in Spain and the oldest in the Valencian Community: its statutes were passed by the city's municipal magistrates on 30 April 1499, with roots going back to 1246, when Pope Innocent IV authorised general studies in Valencia at the request of James I the Conqueror; Pope Alexander VI signed the bull of approval in 1501. Its foundation owed much to the zeal of Vincent Ferrer, later canonised, and from the start its courses spanned Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, philosophy, theology, law and medicine. Today it teaches around 55,000 students in Spain's third-largest city.
