The University of Zaragoza, founded in 1542, is one of the oldest universities in Spain, with a history reaching back to the Roman period, and its campuses and research centres now spread over the three provinces of Aragon. It is the alma mater of Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Nobel laureate and father of modern neuroscience, of prime ministers including Manuel Azaña, and of the Cuban national hero José Martí. In 2014 it counted more than 30,000 students across 22 centres and 74 degrees.
