Aix-Marseille University was founded in 1409, when Louis II of Anjou, Count of Provence, petitioned Antipope Alexander V to establish the University of Provence — one of the oldest universities in the French-speaking world. Its modern form arrived on 1 January 2012, when the University of Provence, the University of the Mediterranean and Paul Cézanne University reunified into the largest university in the francophone world by students, staff and budget, standing at €750 million. Organised across five main campuses in Aix-en-Provence and Marseille, it counts five Nobel laureates among alumni and faculty and collaborates closely with the CNRS and the CEA.
