About Universidade de Coimbra (FEUC)

The University of Coimbra was chartered by King Denis on 1 March 1290 and recognised by Pope Nicholas IV that same year, making it the oldest university in Portugal and one of the oldest in the world in continuous operation; it began in Lisbon and moved permanently to Coimbra in 1537. Its historic influence, architecture and traditions earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 2013, and it lends its name to the Coimbra Group of European research universities, of which it was a founding member in 1985. Enrolling over 25,000 students — more than 15% international — it counts Luís de Camões, Portugal's national poet, and the Nobel laureate Egas Moniz among its alumni.
