Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa was established in Lisbon in 1972 as the Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa, conceived as a step towards a new and innovative public university: 296 students matriculated in its first year, 219 of them in Economics. It became a university institute of foundational nature in 2009 and celebrated 50 years in 2022, opening a new centre in Sintra. Based in the city's Cidade Universitária, it is widely considered a fully-fledged public research university, and ISCTE Business School holds institutional accreditations from AACSB and AMBA.
