The University of Porto was founded by decree of 22 March 1911, issued by the Provisional Government of the First Portuguese Republic, drawing together institutions with far older roots: the Polytechnic Academy and the Medical-Surgical Academy, both active from 1836 to 1911, and before them the Nautical Academy established by King Joseph I in 1762 and the Royal Navy and Commerce Academy of 1803. It is today the second-largest Portuguese university by enrolled students, after Lisbon, and has one of the most noted research outputs in Portugal.
