About École Polytechnique
École Polytechnique — l'X — was founded in 1794 by the mathematician Gaspard Monge during the French Revolution and militarised under Napoleon in 1804; it is still supervised by the French Ministry of Armed Forces, and its French engineering students are paid officer cadets who undergo military training. Moved in 1976 from the Latin Quarter to Palaiseau, in the Paris-Saclay cluster, it has produced three Nobel laureates, a Fields Medalist and three presidents of France, along with Cauchy, Poincaré, Ampère, Becquerel, Mandelbrot and the economists Allais and Tirole — a roll-call matched by few institutions on Earth.
