Erasmus University Rotterdam was founded on 8 November 1913 as the Netherlands School of Commerce, a private initiative carried by Rotterdam's business community. Recognised with university status in 1937 as the Netherlands School of Economics, it added law and social sciences in the 1960s, then philosophy, history and business administration. The Medical Faculty Rotterdam, established by the government in 1966, grew into Erasmus MC, one of Western Europe's largest medical centres. Named for the humanist Desiderius Erasmus, the university anchors Dutch business education through its Rotterdam School of Management.
