The University of Amsterdam was established in 1632 by the city's municipal authorities, making it the fourth-oldest academic institution in the Netherlands still in operation — and today the largest in the country by enrolment, with more than 44,000 students, some 6,200 staff and an annual budget of €850 million. Organised into seven faculties with its main campus in the centre of Amsterdam, it belongs to the League of European Research Universities and Universitas 21, and has produced six Nobel laureates and five Dutch prime ministers.
