Official call ↗About Utrecht University (USE)
Utrecht University was established on 26 March 1636, growing out of the Illustrious School of Utrecht founded two years earlier; the theologian Gisbertus Voetius gave the inaugural speech, and Anna Maria van Schurman — the university's first female student — was invited to write a Latin poem for the occasion. It flourished in the Dutch Golden Age, drawing students from across Europe to witness the intellectual battle between Voetius and the new philosophy of Descartes, who lived in Utrecht for a few years. One of the oldest universities in the Netherlands, in 2025 it enrolled 38,493 students, and it belongs to both the Coimbra Group and the League of European Research Universities.
