Maastricht University, the second-youngest of the fourteen Dutch universities, began teaching in September 1974 — with about 50 students, before it even had legal recognition — and was officially established on 9 January 1976, when Queen Juliana signed its charter in the Basilica of Saint Servatius. Born as a medical school to help the government restructure Limburg after the collapse of its coal mining industry, it pioneered problem-based learning in the Netherlands. It has become the country's most international university: of its 22,976 students in 2023, 59% came from outside the Netherlands, and most programmes are taught in English.
