Université Grenoble Alpes was founded in 1339 by Humbert II of Viennois and is today the third-largest university in France, with about 60,000 students and over 3,000 researchers. The historic University of Grenoble split apart in 1970 in the aftermath of May 1968; three of its successors — Joseph Fourier, Pierre Mendès-France and Stendhal universities — merged in 2016 to restore the original institution, joined in 2020 by the Grenoble Institute of Technology, the Institute of Political Studies and the School of Architecture. Grenoble is one of the largest scientific centres in Europe, and the university collaborates closely with the CNRS and the CEA.
