The University of Lille has its origins in the University of Douai, founded in 1559, and took its current shape in 2018 through the merger of the city's three universities — Lille 1 for science and technology, Lille 2 for health and law, and Charles de Gaulle Lille III. With more than 80,000 students it is among the largest universities in France and in the French-speaking world.
