Nantes Université descends from a university established by papal bull in 1460 and abolished during the French Revolution; after a re-establishment in the early sixties, the current institution was founded in 1970 under the 1968 law that reformed French higher education. Today it teaches approximately 34,500 students — more than 10% of them international, from 110 countries — across campuses in Nantes and satellite sites in Saint-Nazaire and La Roche-sur-Yon.
