Paris-Saclay University is a public research university in Orsay, formally established in 2019 from the merger of grandes écoles, technological institutes and research facilities — fifteen constituent colleges with over 48,000 students, heir to the University of Paris-Sud of 1971. The French state built it explicitly to rival institutions like MIT: more than 275 laboratories span particle physics to nanoscience, the cluster includes the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques where much of modern algebraic geometry was written, and twelve Fields Medalists and five Nobel laureates have been affiliated with the university and its institutes. Its campuses stretch from the Plateau de Saclay to Versailles and Évry.
