Sciences Po — formally the Paris Institute of Political Studies — was established in 1872 by Émile Boutmy as the École libre des sciences politiques, a private school born in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War to train a new French elite in political science, law and history. Nationalised and re-founded as a public institution after World War II, it pioneered political science as an academic discipline in France and progressively expanded into economics, law and sociology. Its undergraduates study in Paris and on six regional campuses — from Menton to Reims — each focused on a different part of the world; 80% of graduates now enter the private sector.
