The University of Strasbourg descends from the humanist gymnasium founded in 1538 by Johannes Sturm in the free imperial city of Strasbourg; it became a university in 1621 and was a centre of intellectual life during the Enlightenment, with Goethe among its students. Split into three institutions in the seventies, it was consolidated again in 2009 and today spans 35 faculties, schools and institutes and 71 research laboratories across six campuses, with over 52,000 students. Its alumni, faculty and researchers include 18 Nobel laureates, the chemist Louis Pasteur, the historian Marc Bloch and the statesman Robert Schuman.
