The University of Montpellier is one of the oldest universities in the world: its first statutes were granted by Conrad of Urach in 1220, and a papal bull of Nicholas IV combined the city's centuries-old schools into a university in 1289. Its medical school is the oldest in the world still in operation — excellent physicians were recorded in Montpellier as early as 1137 — and professors of its law school were prominent in drafting the Napoleonic Code. Split into three universities in 1970, it was reunified in 2015 through the merger of Montpellier 1 and Montpellier 2, with Paul Valéry University remaining separate.
