The University of Rennes in its current form dates from 1 January 2023, when the University of Rennes 1 — itself created in 1970 from the splitting of the historic University of Rennes — merged with five grandes écoles: the École des Hautes Études en Santé Publique, the École nationale supérieure de chimie de Rennes, ENS Rennes, INSA Rennes and Sciences Po Rennes. The merger brought the public university of Brittany's capital and the city's specialist schools together under a single institution.
