The University of Bayreuth is one of Germany's youngest universities, and it owes its existence to local determination: on 5 November 1969 the Bayreuth City Council, facing economic stagnation and emigration in a corner of Bavaria hemmed in by the borders with the GDR and Czechoslovakia, unanimously requested a university for the city, and a university association founded in March 1970 quickly grew to 800 members — beating out Bamberg, Coburg, Passau and others for the site. Organised into seven largely autonomous faculties, it offers interdisciplinary courses such as Global Change Ecology and Health Economics and is a member of the Elite Network of Bavaria.
