Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München was originally established as the University of Ingolstadt in 1472 by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut, making it Germany's sixth-oldest university in continuous operation. Moved to Landshut in 1800 when Ingolstadt was threatened by the French, it was transferred to Munich in 1826 by King Ludwig I; the name honouring Ludwig IX and King Maximilian I dates from 1802. Today LMU is Germany's second-largest university, with 52,658 students in the 2025/26 winter semester across 18 faculties. As of 2023 it is associated with 50 Nobel laureates, and it holds the title of University of Excellence.
