About Universidade de Évora

The University of Évora is the second-oldest university in Portugal, established in 1559 by Cardinal Henry — the future king — with university status granted by Pope Paul IV in his Cum a nobis bull, and run by the Jesuits for two centuries. That allegiance sealed its fate: in the Marquis of Pombal's campaign against the Society of Jesus, cavalry surrounded the college in 1759 and the university was permanently closed in 1779, its masters incarcerated or exiled. It reopened on the same historic site only in 1973, as a university institute, and took back the name Universidade de Évora in 1979.
