The Free University of Berlin was established on 4 December 1948 by faculty members and students in West Berlin, with American support, as the de facto Western continuation of the old University of Berlin, which had reopened in the Soviet sector; its very name declared West Berlin's place in the 'Free World' of the Cold War. From its main campus in the leafy Dahlem district, it has become one of Germany's Universities of Excellence — one of only six nationwide recognised in all three rounds of the Excellence Initiative, through 2019 as part of the Berlin University Alliance — with five Nobel laureates among its people and 18 Leibniz Prize winners by 2020.
