About Goethe-Universität Frankfurt

Goethe University Frankfurt was founded in 1914 as a citizens' university — created and funded by Frankfurt's wealthy, liberal citizenry rather than by a prince or a state, with members of the city's Jewish community donating two thirds of the foundation capital. In 1932 it took the name of the city's most famous son, the poet and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Today it teaches around 48,000 students across four major campuses in the city, and 20 Nobel Prize winners have been affiliated with it, including Max von Laue and Max Born.
