About Universität Göttingen

The University of Göttingen — the Georgia Augusta — was founded in 1734 by George II, King of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover, began instruction in 1737, and is the oldest university in Lower Saxony. From the late 19th to the early 20th century it was one of the world's great centres of mathematics and physics, home to Hilbert, Klein, Born and Prandtl and a magnet for students including J. Robert Oppenheimer, before the Nazi purge of 1933 drove out much of its faculty; it reopened under British control in 1945. By its own count it is affiliated with 47 Nobel Prize winners, belongs to the U15 group, and collaborates closely with the Max Planck Society.
