The University of Hamburg was founded on 28 March 1919 by combining the city's General Lecture System, the Hamburg Colonial Institute and the Academic College — a late birth for a major German university, and a contested one: much of the Hanseatic establishment wanted Hamburg to remain a trading centre and resisted the costs and ambitions of a university, until Senator Werner von Melle's push for a merger of existing institutions prevailed. Its main campus sits in the central district of Rotherbaum, with institutes and research centres distributed across the city-state, and seven Nobel Prize winners are affiliated with it.
